For over a century, semi trucks have played a crucial role in American and global infrastructure. In particular, semi trucks are absolutely vital to food distribution, but they transport a vast assortment of other goods as well. At Kaos Truck & Trailer Repair, we have great respect for the trucking industry and we take immense pride in providing roadside semi truck repair in Southern Nevada. We’re not just highly experienced diesel mechanics, we’re also big rig enthusiasts who love to learn more about the industry. Here are four fun facts about semi trucks.

It’s Not an Overstatement to Call them “Big” Rigs

While semi truck lengths can vary significantly, they average about 70 feet. America’s longest truck is the “Red Giant,” which is a tractor and trailer setup that reaches 93 feet. As far as weight goes, the heaviest standard semi trucks weigh up to 80,000 pounds. These big rigs are called LCVs (longer combination vehicles). Special permitting allows trucks to haul oversized loads, pushing the weight even higher than 80,000 pounds. Single-axle rigs have a limit of 20,000 pounds.

A Lot more Gears than Your Standard Car

Standard manual transmission semi trucks often have ten gears. However, some trucks have up to 18. This collection of gears allows operators to more safely slow their trucks on steep slopes.

Most Goods Are Transported by Semi Trucks

About 70% of all goods in the United States spend time in semi trucks. To keep products moving to market, semi trucks are absolutely vital.

Far Less Fuel-Efficient than Commuter Vehicles

Class 8 semi trucks (weight rating above 33,000 pounds) average under 6 miles per gallon. While semi trucks do burn a ton of fuel, there are modern advancements that are improving their efficiency, such as better aerodynamics, hybrid motors, and automated transmissions.
