In semi trucks, there are air braking systems that utilize compressed air to bring the brake shoe lining to the brake drum. This generates the necessary friction to bring the truck to a stop. To stay as safe as possible, it’s important that all aspects of the air braking system are functioning optimally. If you think there could be an issue with your truck’s air brakes, then you should have an experienced technician inspect the matter. At Kaos Truck & Trailer Repair, our local big rig mechanics provide mobile air brake repair in the greater Las Vegas, NV area. Here are five common air brake problems.

Loses Pressure Too Quickly

If there’s an issue with the valves that control airflow out of the reservoir, then pressure may be lost too fast. When pressure is lost too quickly, the compressor can become stressed.

Pressure Builds Too Slowly

A compressor problem can cause pressure to build too slowly, which may lead to issues with the truck’s ability to properly decelerate. To help ensure that your truck can safely slow down, it’s very important that the compressor is able to properly pressurize air.

Stuck Brake Shoe

If you’re dealing with a stuck brake shoe, then your truck may still be able to come to a stop. However, you could then have trouble when you try to accelerate.

Misaligned Brake Shoes

Ideally, your brake shoes will wear down evenly. If one brake shoe gets thinner, then it may wear down even more rapidly. This could cause signs of trouble such as squealing and scraping sounds.

Water/Oil in Air Reservoir

In air brakes, the air dryer removes water/oil from the air before it enters the reservoir. This helps to prevent corrosion. Problems with an air dryer cartridge may result in water entering the reservoir.
